Make it something you do.<\/a>\u00a0(<em>2011 theme was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.veterans.gc.ca\/eng\/remembrance\/veterans-week\/posters\/poster2011\">How will you Remember?<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Shamelessly stolen from the Veterans Affairs website<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your challenge is to make remembrance more than something you feel. Make it something you do. There are many ways you can show that you remember and honour our Veterans.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pin a poppy above your heart;<\/li>\n<li>attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony;<\/li>\n<li>follow Veterans Affairs Canada on Twitter;<\/li>\n<li>download the \u201cWe Remember\u201d mobile app;<\/li>\n<li>listen to Veterans talk about their experiences;<\/li>\n<li>create a mashup and share it on the Veterans Affairs Canada YouTube channel;<\/li>\n<li>visit the Veterans Affairs Canada fan page on Facebook, write on our wall and share how you remember;<\/li>\n<li>change your Facebook profile picture to a poppy, write on your wall about how you remember or create your own remembrance fan page.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/valianthosting.ca\/clients\/daemon\/?p=1711\">In 2010<\/a> I decided to donate funds to friend&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ca.movember.com\/\">Movember<\/a>\u00a0campaigns based on the number of poppies I saw people wearing as I randomly walked through Edmonton. In 2011, I expanded my list of charities to donate to (<a href=\"http:\/\/ca.movember.com\/\">Movember<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kidsneedtoread.org\">Kids Need to Read<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/boomerslegacy.ca\/info.htm\">Boomer&#8217;s Legacy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/woundedwarriors.ca\/\">WoundedWarriors.ca<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/calicanrescue.wordpress.com\/\">CaliCan Rescue Foundation<\/a>).\u00a0I haven&#8217;t yet decided who the beneficiary of my 2012 poppy count will be.<\/p>\n<p>As always, I&#8217;m donating\u00a0<strong>$0.10<\/strong> to each charity for each\u00a0poppy I see people wearing as I wander around Edmonton &amp; Ottawa from the Poppy Campaign&#8217;s launch date until November 11.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0<em><strong>will<\/strong><\/em> be counting poppies on my way to work, at work, and running normal day-to-day errands (shopping, bill payments, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>I know <em>10 cents per poppy<\/em> doesn&#8217;t seem like much, but I&#8217;m since I&#8217;m planning on counting poppies for approximately 20 days and will be attending the Remembrance Day ceremony at the\u00a0War Memorial in Ottawa\u00a0this year, I expect the\u00a0dollar amount\u00a0to add up quickly. I&#8217;m optimistic; hoping to see far more poppies in 2012\u00a0than I did during my previous counting experiments in 2010-2011.<\/p>\n<p>Why no donation to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legion.ca\/\">Royal Canadian Legion<\/a> you might ask? My husband and I are Legion members and donate to their programs throughout the year. I also have an annual tradition of purchasing a new poppy each\u00a0day of the campaign. And Honestly? I\u00a0suspect that the Legion&#8217;s poppy campaign will benefit more from my poppy purchase traditions than from my poppy\u00a0counting project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; side note &#8211;<\/strong><br \/>\nIn 2010 I also decided to try and collect photos of poppies on\u00a0people&#8217;s jackets from the date the poppy campaign began until Nov 11. Instead of randomly photographing strangers, I asked friends and family to send in a picture of themselves wearing a poppy. Sadly, my collection was tiny and the project was a bust.
