{"id":578,"date":"2008-04-11T11:53:33","date_gmt":"2008-04-11T11:53:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valianthosting.ca\/clients\/daemon\/?p=578"},"modified":"2008-04-11T11:53:33","modified_gmt":"2008-04-11T11:53:33","slug":"warman-vs-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/screamingpages.net\/?p=578","title":{"rendered":"warman vs. <em>the world<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those who&#8217;ve been paying attention in the Canadian blogosphere are likely well aware of this issue.\u00a0 For my readers who may not float around politically slanted blogs as often as I do this may be new.<\/p>\n<p>I may not read some of these authors frequently (or in some cases, at all).\u00a0 I certainly don&#8217;t agree with everything written by those I do read.\u00a0 However, there are many aspects of this lawsuit and the underlying concept that speech should be censored that should be of concern to us all.\u00a0 Since there&#8217;s already so many postings on the topic of the Canadian Human Rights Commission behaviour of late [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/story.html?id=405744\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/michellemalkin.com\/2008\/03\/05\/the-canadian-conservative-blogosphere-is-under-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/article.jsp?content=20080326_110442_5820\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/most_popular\/story.html?id=175234\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steynonline.com\/content\/view\/764\/30\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/national\/blog\/video\/rex_murphy\/human_rights_gone_awry.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for starters], I&#8217;ll skip over Warman&#8217;s association with the CHRC and the battles in which he&#8217;s currently embroiled as plaintiff in that arena.<\/p>\n<p>What does concern me is the pattern of behaviour that has been in evidence since the early-to-mid 1990&#8217;s.\u00a0\u00a0 For how much longer will we allow this to continue in Canada?<\/p>\n<p><strong>First step:<\/strong> silence dissenting opinions &#8211; bloggers, publishers, authors and columnists of national magazines and newspapers &#8211; no one is safe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second step:<\/strong> censor books.\u00a0 Remove from public libraries materials that some might find offensive.\u00a0 Oh wait, <a href=\"http:\/\/ezralevant.com\/2008\/03\/warmans-law.html\" target=\"_blank\">that&#8217;s already been tried<\/a>.\u00a0 The BC Gov&#8217;t had to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccla.org\/newsletter\/BCCLA%20news%20Dec%202004.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">draft and enact a law specifically designed to protect libraries<\/a> from being forced to comply with requests to remove books from their\u00a0 shelves by public citizens who happen to be suing the book&#8217;s author.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third step:<\/strong> dictate what we&#8217;re supposed to think and feel and how we are to behave?<\/p>\n<p>Section 2, Fundamental Freedoms, of the <a href=\"http:\/\/laws.justice.gc.ca\/en\/charter\/#garantie\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian charter of rights and freedoms<\/a> guarantees all Canadians &#8220;<em>freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication<\/em>&#8220;. \u00a0\u00a0 The absolute right to free speech is limited to politicians statements within the House of Commons.\u00a0 All other Canadians share limitations on what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uottawa.ca\/constitutional-law\/expression.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Section 2b<\/strong><\/em><\/a> of the Charter will cover.\u00a0 Despite what has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpost.com\/news\/story.html?id=405744\">bandied about<\/a> in past CHRC tribunals regarding the concept of free speech, it is as much of a Canadian value as an American one.\u00a0 The Canadian right to free speech may not be as old or ingrained as the US right &#8211; the Canadian charter wasn&#8217;t made official until 1982 &#8211; and does not protect &#8220;Hate speech&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Twas (I believe) Voltaire who stated: &#8216;<em>I don&#8217;t agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it<\/em>.&#8217;\u00a0 Many military members I&#8217;ve met over the years have spouted this same phrase as an underlying defense for why they willingly go or do whatever the Canadian government tells them to &#8211;
