Warning: The basis of the opinion expressed below is my personal experiences with a variety of people as we’ve moved from province to province. I know it’s occasionally reflective of bits and pieces of my own personality. It may not be representative of you, the reader. However, you may want to take a quick peek in the mirror just to be sure.

One of my favourite things about Canadians is our self-depreciating humour and ability to poke fun at ourselves, no matter what the situation. Our best comics are brimming with the skill and many of our popular comedy shows (Made in Canada, Corner Gas, etc.) are ripe with it.

In a country with multiple cultures, languages, and regional variations, our ability to laugh at ourselves is perhaps the one shared experience that flows from sea to sea to sea. As my high school English teacher used to say (Hi Mr. Horgan!) Canada is divided, not only in literature but in politics and physical landscape, by what can be most easily classified as a regional mentality. “We don’t live at the butt end of the earth, but you can sure see it from here”.

A few months ago I posted the Manitoba Driver’s Handbook on my site. It’s a standard email chain joke, but one that I felt particularly attached to after learning to drive in Winnipeg. By the same token, I posted the Rules for entering Alberta – another silly chain email not too long ago. Imagine my surprise when a commenter wrote that they were embarrassed to be an Albertan after reading the joke and how happy they were that they lived in Edmonton where this attitude isn’t as prevalent.

Guess they didn’t notice I’m located in Edmonton – or weren’t aware that the original source of the email (on it’s way to me) was a born and bred Edmontonian. It struck me how easy it is for people to see or hear the same thing and yet interpret it completely differently. While Wendy and I appreciated the “joke” for it’s tiny moments of truth (there are some Albertans who’d love these rules), over-the top pronouncements, and ability to stand on a soapbox and say it’s OK to make fun of ourselves, someone else read the posting and interpreted it in a literal fashion. Personally, it never occurred to me to take anything in the original email/posting as the literal truth ™.

Perhaps that’s because I don’t believe there’s a one true way for anything – culture, religion, education, etc. Or perhaps it’s because I’m particularly proud of our ability to make fun of ourselves. Either way, when we have a negative reaction to something we read, I think we all need to take a step back and take a moment to try to understand whether or not our negativity is the result of our own internal bias’ and interpretation of what we’re reading, or if it’s caused by something that directly contradicts our own morals and values. More often than not, I’ve noticed that my own negative reactions aren’t caused by the person I’m conversing with, but rather by the interpretation (spin) I place on their words.

I am responsible for my own bias and the roadblocks that develop as a result of them are my own issues. It’s not someone else’s responsibility to help show me a better way to walk through the world or interact with others. If you’re offended by something, take a step back, and determine why you’re offended. Only when we’re reflecting on our own beliefs, mores, and values can we really open ourselves to viewing the world as a multi-faceted place where there’s room for everyone.

Thursday Thirteen – Unemployment Edition #1

Welcome to the 20th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

Friday is my last day at work. I’m soon to be unemployed. Since I left school, I’ve been continuously employed for 9 years. This week, my T13 outlines my plans my first few days of unemployed life.

    button_thursdaythirteen.jpg
Thirteen things I plan to do next week.

    1. Sleep: I’ve completed 200 hours of unpaid OT since Jan 1, 2007. I think I’ve earned a break!
    2. Clean: We’ve made a dent in my office/library but there’s still so much more to do.
    3. Read: I’ve got a shelf of books beside the bed that need to be read. Perhaps I’ll reach the 52 book mark by the end of April…
    4. Cook: I don’t enjoy cooking for one and Drew does the bulk of the cooking normally. However, since I’ll be home while he’s working, I’m pretty sure I can make my way back into the kitchen and serve up some meals.
    5. Volunteer: I’ve always wanted to be more active in our community. Having free time will provide the perfect opportunity to help others and get to know others in my neighbourhood.
    6. Garden: If the weather holds *fingers crossed* I think I’ll turn some earth and plant some flowers in the planters on my stairs.
    7. Mail Books: I actually plan to do this tomorrow, but if I don’t manage it, I’ll be shipping a number of the books I’ve registered on bookcrossing off those who’ve expresssed interest in them.
    8. Send MOT on his way: I should have done this over the weekend, but haven’t had the time. If I don’t manage to do this tomorrow afternoon, then I’ll definitely be making a trip to the post office to send MOT on to his next travel destination. He was a wonderful traveling companion and I’m going to miss him.
    9. Walk the dogs: I’m sure they’ll love walking in the daylight instead of darkness. The only challenge will be keeping both of them from tripping me! It’s hard enough to keep my feet under me without the assistance *cough* of the dogs.
    10. Play with the cats: I’ve been away so much that the cats have really been ignored. Drew’s not much of a cat person and Than’s my baby, so it’ll be nice to spoil her rotten for a while.
    11. Scrapbook: It’s addictive. I started one almost a year ago and just haven’t had the time to finish it. Since I’m going to have lots of time on my hands, I just might finish it this decade.
    12. Watch a Viggo Mortensen marathon: *Yummy* Perhaps I’ll spend some time re-reading his books next week as well.
    13. Take pictures: There’s still a lot I need to learn about composition and taking a good picture. I think I’ll wander around the neighbourhood and get some practice in.

    two days to freedom

I’ve got two more days to complete at work before I’m completely free. I still don’t know what I’m going to do next. Many of the jobs I’ve been applying for have postings that don’t close for a few more days or weeks. I also don’t expect government offices to have quick hiring processes, so I may be unemployed longer than I’d like.

On the bright side, I do have a grand plan for the next few weeks. Before I fall back on working in the service industry – and serving coffee at Timmy’s – I’m going to connect with a few volunteer organizations that interest me and use this time to become more active in my community. If nothing else, it’ll give me something interesting to talk about when someone asks about the gap in my resume during an interview.

It might give me a new perspective on life. If nothing else, it should help keep my normally worrying down to a minimum while I’m pounding the payment and searching for a new job.

    hand cramps and clean rooms

Over the past few days, we’ve buckled under and cleaned out the office/library in order to find the floor and the desk. In addition to sorting out the keep and discard piles in the room, we’ve pulled out a number of books to hand out via bookcrossing. If anyone is interested in any of these books before I head out to start dropping them off around the city, check the list of “available” books on my bookcrossing bookshelf and send me an email (or leave a comment and I’ll get in touch with you). I’ll find some way to get the book to you.

Feast Number One Hundred & Thirty Six

Appetizer: Who is your favorite news anchor/reporter? Why?.

    • I’m very partial to the Stewart/Colbert power hour. If I have to explain it, you won’t understand.

Soup: Name 3 foods that are currently in your freezer.

    • Bison, Salmon, Ice Cream

Salad: If you were to have the opportunity to name a new town or city, what would you call it?

    • I’m partial to Midian.

Main Course: What will most likely be the next book you read?

    • Coyote Blue – Christopher Moore

Dessert: What’s the first thing you notice about the opposite gender?

    • Eyes, followed almost immediately by hands.

    Condiments:

    1. How’s your car running?
The car is running pretty rough, but that’s likely cause it’s a 1990 with close to 200,000 kms on it. The truck runs beautiful though.
    2. How’s your blood pressure?
      A little low.
    3. How’s work (or school)?
Work is almost gone. I resigned last week, final day is the 30th of the month. I haven’t found a new job yet. School’s on hold until I get a job so I can pay tuition.
    4. How’s 2007 so far?
I’m reserving judgment for the time being.
    5. How’s your hair?
It’s a bit brittle and dry despite the overload of conditioning treatment it gets each week. I blame it all on the blonde.

h/t to Caylynn’s Contemplations for the FF graphic. I shamelessly swiped it from her site.
