Each year since returning to Canada full-time in 2007, I have counted the poppies I see people wearing from the day the poppy campaign begins until 11am on November 11th. I'd tally up the count, donate 0.10$ per poppy, and send a cheque to a local veterans organization.
It used to be a sizeable donation.
In recent years, I've noticed my poppy count decreasing. I worry sometimes that people have begun to forget the past. I worry that we will soon relive their horrors in our future.
I don't base my donation on poppy counts anymore. And I no longer wait until Remembrance day arrives to make them.
I am changing too. Hopefully, for the better.

We do strange things at our local karaoke bar. We sing rounds in the dark when the lights go out. We scrapbook. We tag inanimate objects with pithy sayings and watch our friend Robin get sent to the corner for a timeout when she misbehaves. Sometimes, we just hold strange conversations.
Friday, we were discussing misheard song lyrics and songs that have, what appears to be, stuttering in the lyrics. We didn’t come up with enough possible songs to make a CD out of either of the lists, so now I’m expecting you, my 3 faithful readers, to help us complete the 10-13 song discs.
Here’s what we’ve got so far:
Speech Impediment Rock
Misheard Lyrics
Get cracking. What can you add to our lists?

I have in my hot little hands the draft copy of a paper that will be delievered at a conference in Vegas next month. I’m not the brain trust behind it, but along with the rest of my department, I’m getting co-author credit from the primary author. In a few short months, I’ll have my name on another paper to be delivered at a conference in Banff. In the meantime, I’m working the the primary author on paper #1 (and #2 if we’re going to be picky) on yet another paper that will have shared authorship between the two of us. If this keeps up, I’ll have a decent CV in the works in time for my application into a few Masters programs. Yippee!

The Alberta election is schedule to take place in a few weeks and I’m busy watching (ok, listening) to the leader’s debate on television tonight. I’m full of vim, vigour and cynacism when it comes to politics in Canada and I’m really struggling to get into the mood to vote this time around. Of course, I’m a good little girl who will definitely vote – I can’t carry on the tried and true Canadian tradition of complaining about politics if I don’t – but I’m really struggling to find an issue to feel passionate about in the upcoming election.
I know what I don’t want. I don’t want money thrown at issues when no coherent plan is in place to generate a permanent resolution. I don’t want politicians to get raises when those incapable of caring for themselves struggle to keep a roof over their heads. I don’t want my taxes raised without a good justification for increased spending.
I also know what I want. I want everyone to have somewhere to live and food in their belly. I want the “justice” system overhauled to include expectations of increased accountability and responsibility for criminal’s actions. I want victims to stop being victimized by the “justice” system that is supposed to be there to protect and assist them. I want to be able to continue to pay my bills and attend university on my small salary so I don’t have to leave my job and search for a better paying one.
So far, nothing I’ve heard tonight is ringing any bells regarding the items on my want list. Luckily the night is early and the leader’s debate continues…
