  • Letters combine to make words

Got home after 7pm tonight but for once it wasn’t due to overtime. One of the bonuses of working at a college or university is that they have libraries. I love libraries. Tonight I spent some time culling through a bunch of databases at ours to complete a literature search for a paper.

I’ve always loved to read. There’s just something wonderful about books. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been going to libraries. It was our Saturday morning ritual with my dad when we were kids. While he poked about in the crime and sci-fi section my sister and I poked about the children’s section. We always left with mitt fulls of books. Mum even enrolled us in a book reading camp one summer at the main library downtown.

I barely remember going to bed as a child and not seeing my dad sitting at the kitchen table reading a book with a few more stacked by his elbow. And mum? She was frequently curled up on the couch reading. No wonder I’d hide under the covers with a flashlight and read for a few hours at bedtime each night.

Dad was still reading books for hours a day right up until a few weeks before he passed away.

Considering my love for books it should come as no surprise that I married a reader. We frequently read the same books. I get first dibs since I’m a speedier reader. Since he’s been gone he’s had less access to reading materials. We’ve been sending him books for weeks now in the hopes he’ll keep himself occupied and make a good contribution to the KAF library when he leaves.

It seems only my sister has managed to avoid being bitten by the reading bug. Even then, she still reads on occassion.

I can’t imagine being unable to read. Not being able to find comfort and joy in letters and pages – the thought scares me deeply.

Other great book memories include all the times I’d paw through boxes and stacks of books at the local swap meet at Parkway and McAllister Malls on Sunday’s after church. Finding a hardcover Nancy Drew I didn’t already own was the hi-lite of my trip.

And I can’t forget the sheer excitement of bringing the Scholastic book flyer home from elementary school a few times a year. The thrill of deciding which books to ask my parents to order could only be surpassed by the joy of book delivery day. I’d devour the books as soon as they arrived home.

Yeah. I’m a book nerd from way back. Proud of it too!

The most special of my childhood books – the collection (unabridged) of Grimm’s fairy tales my dad gave me for my 8th birthday, the Judy Blume collection from my parents and my old Nancy Drew’s – have traveled with me from one end of the country to the other over the years. A few years back I fell into a pit of nostalgia and bought some of my all time favourite childhood books to add to my smaller collection. I have a small bookcase filled with them now.

As the years pass and technology changes I find I’m buying more and more books in eBook format. I’ve read books on iPaq’s (have I just dated myself?), laptops, and now on my iPhone. In fact, the ability to read books on my iPhone is my absolute favourite feature. It makes the original expense of purchasing my fancy little phone well worth every penny.

And the 130+ books I’ve downloaded to read on it fill me with glee. I’m giddy with the thought of making my way through them.

I’d never survive as a librarian. Nor work in a publishing house. Too much organization involved and it would ruin the mystique. I don’t want anything to interfere with my sordid love affiar with the written word. No wonder I read 300+ books a year. I’m an addict and proud of it.

Now you’ll have to excuse me. I have a book to read.

    taking a break

Spent a huge chunk of today in waiting rooms in between being poked and prodded.  End result – the vampires have their million pints of blood and I have a new family doctor. Start the parade. He seems nice enough and since he was willing to take me on I think I’m gonna keep him. Considering how hard it appears to get a family doctor in this town that seems to be a good idea at this point.

Since returning home I’ve spent the bulk of my afternoon and early evening writing papers.  Upside: I’ve finished one of two papers due this weekend. Downside: It’s the one due on Saturday; not the one due Friday. I’ve still got a bit more to do before I’m going to consider this paper in the bag and move on to the next one.  Hopefully after an hour on the treadmill I’ll be ready to head back to it and finish it off.  Can’t afford to do much more procrastination at this point.

All this work in the home office reminds me that I have a really crappy office chair since Loxley killed the last one. I have never found a suitable replacement – never having been all that fond of the original chair – and so I use a folding card table chair in the office.  It’s uncomfortable as all get out. The plan was to keep a horrible chair in the office so I’d have to avoid spending all day working. It forces me to get up and take breaks. Of course since I’m always waiting until the last minute to actually sit down and write the plan doesn’t usually play out as formulated.  Instead, I’m working my way to needing a good, long soak in the jacuzzi tub to recover from my paper writing.

And since I’m supposed to be going out to dinner with R&R Friday evening I’ll likely be in similar shape tomorrow night after finishing the paper for my MilPsych class. That’s it then. I’m off to take a short break to exercise then back to the salt mines to work on the second paper.  If I can complete 50% of it tonight, I should be in great shape to have it submitted before I toddle off to dinner with R&R Friday evening.

Hmmm. I wonder if I can convince them to come to karaoke after dinner?  It has been a while since they’ve come out to sing…

    Interview anticipation

I go back to the doctor’s tomorrow to be poked and prodded, questioned (grilled?), weighed and measured. Hopefully I won’t be found lacking. A large chunk of the day is going to be spent completing round two of my interview to become a patient. After all is said and done I’ll be trying to finish off at least one of my two papers tomorrow before I return to work on Thursday.

At some point I’m going to have to bite the bullet and buy a student copy of SPSS. I’m not having much luck finding it for less than $100 but it certainly would come in handy in my Stats class. Perhaps my student advisor will have good news when she replies to my email about student licensing. Keep your fingers and toes crossed.

Off to toddle on my treadmill and work off lunch. Or sleep. Sleep would be good. Yeah. Sleep. There’s a great plan. Zzzzzzz.

    Positive procrastination

I have two papers due this week and in true form I am currently avoiding beginning either paper. All is not lost though. I also have a statistics assignment due at the beginning of next week so I spent this evening completing readings from my Stats class and working on practice exercises. I should feel guilty about not working on my papers but it’s hard to do so when you’re busy doing other homework assignments instead.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

After far too many weeks on hiatus “Chuck” returns to TV tonight. Down side of the return is that it’s supposed to be presented in 3D. Me, I have no 3D glasses to use while watching. Granted with my one freaky eye I’ve never actually managed to see 3D TV or movies properly even when wearing the silly glasses. I’m hoping the episode won’t look to weird for those of us who’ll be watching with “normal” prescription glasses on.

Work was pretty good today. New boss continues to inspire confidence – in me at least – and today was a lot more relaxed than the final days of last weeks.

I’ve got Wednesday off this week to make it through the doctor’s tests. And the remainder of the day will be spent working in my papers. So goes the plan.

I skipped my exercise routine over the weekend due to all the wild partying, assignments, and long hours at work. Tonight I’m back on the treadmill and trying to start again. Baby steps to the elevator and all that nonsense.

Wiarton Willy may have seen his shadow today but that’s old news. More importantly, it’s now two days into Tuesday. Friday is just around the corner. Only a few months left to go…

    Closing out the weekend

Was a great weekend overall. Not being a fan of NFL football I skipped the Superbowl but still got to keep up with details through the magic of Twitter. Don’t get me wrong. I’d watch the game if the Canadian channels carried the US commercials. Since they don’t I spent my time completing readings for class and getting assignments done. I still have lots more to do – especially since I have two papers due by Friday – but I’m starting to catch up again.

There’s always hulu.com for the US commercials. Got to love the interwebs.

Got a call from Drew this evening which always tops of my Sunday evenings. I may get two calls this week a he purchased a calling card this week to get extra minutes.

Drew received the second home move CD and, unlike the first one, he was able to view the videos. So whatever went wrong on the first CD burn didn’t occur on the second. Next weekend I’ll likely start converting the video we recorded at Celt-X last night. I can’t convert it during the week because the process pretty much takes over my laptop and renders it unusable for 8 plus hours. I need it to write papers during the week more than I need to send Drew videos. Sorry Drew.

An interesting email popped into my inbox this afternoon which resulted in my NOT working today. Can’t say I was too disappointed since I was able to spent those hours on school work. Tomorrow will be filled with meetings and conversations I’m sure.

Thanks to all the package fairies, Drew’s got a good supply of books to read and use to improve the library at Canada House. Good to know that lots of personnel will be able to pick out something to read other than bodice rippers. Perhaps they should name the new improved library after the donors. Something Gaelic might be appropriate as the bulk of the donors were pipers and drummers.

    Queue the ever expanding ego.

If Drew can swing it we think we know what the mom’s will be getting for Christmas. Nothing like building up a sense of anticipation many months in advance.

Off to watch Rebus before I totter off to sleep. Night all.
