  • Off to the tailor’s I need to go

Spent the afternoon at the WEM with drummer R and mcpyper. Was a lot of fun shopping with other women – even if the Saturday crowds did freak me out a little. I rarely go to the WEM. Maybe 2x a year if that. So I definitely don’t know my way around the mazes (phases) at all. Good thing drummer R aquired a map and knew how to read it.

First stop was Sears. We found great shoes in the clearance area and I found a nice light green sweater set that was also on sale. I also picked up a grey jacket to pair with black or grey pants for my upcoming interviews. I’m kicking myself a little because I’d found a really nice brown suit at Sears about 5 months ago and decided against buying it at the time because I couldn’t think of enough reasons for wearing it to justify the price. Of course, now that I’m looking for a suit I can’t find anything as classic or in my size.

A little while later I picked up a really nice brown suit at Laura’s. It was on the clearance rack and I would never have looked at it twice if it wasn’t on sale. 230$ is well above my budget but at 40$ it was a great buy. It’s still cold enough to wear a lot of winter weight clothes but since all the spring stock is arriving all the winter stuff is being heavily marked down. Not so good for shop owners but very good for me.

The suit is too big to wear until I have it tailored to fit me properly. They didn’t have it in petit which means I had to buy the “normal people” size instead of my actual “short, stumpy” size. There’s at least an extra foot in length at the bottom of the pants that need to be cut off before they’ll fit me properly. The body of the jacket fits well but the arms are also a bit long and will need to be taken up. Once these alterations are made it should fit great and make a solid addition to my “interview collection”.

Now at least I don’t have to wear the same black suit to every interview. I always hesitate when it comes to pulling it out of the closet because it’s the classic cut suit I bought for my dad’s funeral. Aside from the black being a bit severe for interviews, it’s a timeless suit that just carries a bit too much emotional baggage. They say clothes can help set the mood so perhaps these two new outfits will give me an added boost of confidence.

Once past the interview phase I’m sure I can go back to my normal work outfits of dress pants and blouses. Wouldn’t life be so much easier if we could just interview in whatever the standard office dress code was? It would certainly be easier on my pocket book and closet!

Hope everyone else found whatever they were looking for today.

    not dead yet

February 27th, 2009 she Posted in Random Burbling 1 Comment »

Good news on the Dr. appt. front. I’m still fat, ugly, and aging but all my tests came back normal; my blood pressure is good and I’m not dead yet. Go me!

Stopped off at Costco on the way home and had the nose pads swapped out on my glasses.  Bye-bye cute hard plastic hearts that the frame designer probably thought were cool and hello nice soft silicone ones.  The glasses are much more comfortable to wear now.

Was considering going to look for a suit today but I think I’ll try on the green skirt set suit I have in my closet first to see if it still fits.  Weather is supposed to be warmer next week so I might manage to wear a skirt instead of pants without freezing all my girly bits.  Hate to have to spend more $$ on clothes if it can be avoided at this point.

I can see says the blind (wo)man

Loving my new glasses. Well more accurately I’m loving the ability to see things clearly. Watched the Oilers game tonight and could clearly see the puck. I’d forgotten what a non fuzzy puck looked like.

I’m still not sure that I’m a fan of my frames but I’m sure they’ll grow on me. I got quite a few compliments on them today and no one burst out laughing so they can’t be that bad.

I will likely get my daily wear glasses modified at the optical shop. They have cute little plastic heart nose pads. Unfortunately they’re very hard plastic and dig into the side of my nose a bit. So if they can’t be adjusted to fit a bit better I’ll need to see if they’ll be able to swap them out for the softer plastic ones.

The joys of new glasses. They say “seeing is believing” but never tell us what we’re supposes to be believing. Me, I believe I can see.

    Living in the moment

February 21st, 2009 she Posted in Random Burbling 2 Comments »

I’ve has this post rattling around in my head for a while. A while back Wil Wheaton (@wilw) wrote a post on his blog – Wil Wheaton: In Exile – about playing frisbee with his son. Yeah. That Wil Wheaton. Get over yourselves already. He’s a talented author who knows how to weave a story. I’m partial to the audio versions where he reads his own stories. Visit his blog. Go buy his books. Seriously. He’s that good. And a bigger geek you’ll never find no matter how much searching you do. You got to respect a man who knows how to find joy and what’s important in life. Whether or not you’ve ever been a fan of his acting is beside the point.

Anywho. In his post he talked about growing old and not wanting to look back many years down the road only to discover that he wished he’d spent more time playing [insert game/activity here] with his kids.

The sentiment has had a profound effect on me lately. There’s lots of things I’ve regretted over the years. Can’t change any of those. But I can make an effort to ensure that I don’t end up looking back 20 or 40 years from now wishing I’d spent more time with Drew.

This has been a big motivating factor behind the upcoming vacation in July. Despite my impending job loss we’re still going ahead with it. Why not? It’s already paid for and perhaps there’s no better time than now to have a bit of fun time exploring ComicCon, Disney, and SoCal.

What will you do to seize the moment?

    still sick

February 18th, 2009 she Posted in Random Burbling 2 Comments »

Still feeling very ill today. Thank goodness for all those sick days I didn’t use during the year. Took today off but I did work from home a teensy bit. No news on the job front. Then again, most of the postings aren’t closed yet. Will keep my fingers and toes crossed. Doing some homework/reading and then heading back to bed for the rest of the evening.  What I really want to know though is what was in that pizza?
