Today is the last day of work for a few weeks. There are some upsides to working at a college.  The main one being the annual closing of the institution and Christmas vacation. After spending years working every day over the holidays it’s really nice to have nearly two weeks where I can sit back and relax.

I finished registering for all next semester’s classes and am officially poor again. I can’t believe how much textbooks cost these days. For some classes the texts cost more than the course registration fees! At least I’ll have something to do on my days off.  There’s lots of pre-reading to do before my courses officially start on January 5th.

In a few minutes I’ll be heading off to the Post Office to send out Drew’s first package. Hope he enjoys the contents since they’re pretty dull.  All our friends and family seem to be sending him the interesting stuff.  In this first box from me he’s just getting the basics.  Letters.  Foot powder. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks.  Some reading materials. Timmies gift certificates.  I figure I deserve a medal for finally finding the gift certificates he wanted.

Of course, I taped the box shut before I remembered that I wanted to send him stamps. Guess I’ll be sending them in box number two.  I’ve already started putting that box together since I want to take advantage of the free shipping Canada Post is offering for military packages before it runs out at the beginning of January.  Finding more interesting things to put in the box will also give me something to do next week.

    Local girl makes good

December 18th, 2008 she Posted in Random Burbling 2 Comments »

I’m not a big fan of reality shows unless they are real estate or cooking/restaurant related. Tonight I am making an exception. I’m watching Secret Millionaire.

I grew up with a bright and bubbly young girl who grew up to be an amazing woman. A few years back Lisa, like so many others from my hometown, moved away to accept a job. She’s now working in a teen homeless drop-in care centre in sunny Las Vegas. Tonight her centre is featured on Secret Millionaire and I’m eshewing my self-imposed moratorium on reality TV to watch the episode she’s appearing in.

Nothing humbles you quicker than seeing childhood friends doing good. I’m looking forward to it.

Tour Update: Got a very quick message from Drew this afternoon. They’re half way to their destination.

Drew heads out in approximately 39 hours so I won’t be blogging for a bit. Or so the story goes.

    Santa’s work is done

Maybe not everywhere but definitely at our house. We braved the nasty weather and dropped off our Christmas pressies at the neighbours. It’s nasty outside and heading out in this cold is the last thing we want to do. Yay for being done 🙂

    Ever expanding honey-do list

December 14th, 2008 she Posted in Random Burbling No Comments »

As Drew is prepping to leave he’s been crossing items off of the honey-do list I put together for him last week. If truth be told, it’s more of a checklist than a honey-do list. It contained things like “buy new sneakers” and “find spare room after packing kit bag”. Drew’s main complaint is that as soon as he’s knocked a few things off his list I’m adding new items to it. They’re equally as basic. As it gets closer to his departure date we’re becoming more absent minded and I’d hate to have him leave only to discover we’d forgotten to do something important before he left. That and I still have some items on my birthday present honey-do list that were outstanding. Any chance of getting more items off of that list needs to be jumped on immediately. I’m sure he’s wishing he had just bought me a birthday present this year 🙂
