  • Bangalore: The Return

February 25th, 2007 she Posted in Where No Flan Has Gone Before 1 Comment »

I didn’t want to leave Singapore and wasn’t interested in getting back on the plane to Bangalore so soon. Upon landing and arranging for a pre-paid taxi at the airport, I returned to the Service Apartments for some much needed rest. Driving to Bannerghatta Road, I was quickly reminded that while I love the friends I’ve made in Manila, and enjoyed my time in Singapore, I’d lost my heart to India – and specifically Bangalore – years before.

The heat, sounds, sights and smells all combine to create an overwhelming sense of peace, gratitude, and appreciation for both Canada and the slowly shrinking world we live in. For all it’s flaws, most notably the continual attempts of India vendors to squeeze as much money from the caucasian foreigners as possible (man, I’m way too poor to pay the prices they’re demanding – good thing I have great shoes and two functioning feet!), India is a beautiful country with a special way of viewing the world. I’m sorry to say I’ve noticed changes in both the people and places around Bangalore as they slowly meld into a more westernized world view…

Enough fun for the day, I need to start working again this afternoon in preparation for the trip into the office tomorrow.

    26 hours in Singapore

February 25th, 2007 she Posted in Where No Flan Has Gone Before 3 Comments »

    Finally, I got some downtime!

Vini and I had to fly back from Manila to Bangalore this weekend and due to the scheduling of flights, had a one day layover in Singapore. Since Vini used to live in Singapore and had a number of friends still in the area, this actually worked out to be a great day of rest for us.

After a mad rush day of shopping in Greenhills (Manila), we headed out to the Ninoy Airport and our flight to Singapore. We landed in Singapore late on Friday evening and traveled to our hosts home. Indu is an old friend and mentor of Vini’s and a wonderful lady I feel so honoured to have had an opportunity to meet. Tea and hours of conversation filled the time until the wee hours of the morning.

On Saturday I got to play tourist! Vini and Indu needed to do some shopping and visiting with friends, so we headed out to the Esplanade where I could safely wander alone at will.

From the Esplanade, you get a great view of the national symbol of Singapore – the Merlion.

Enjoying the sights on the Esplanade bridge.

Indu recommended a quick Bumboat tour of the Singapore river to see the sights and maximize my time in the area. Bubmoats are traditional vessels that we used to ship cargo back and forth between ships and warehouses in the port before the days of containerized shipping. They have eyes painted on the fronts (a symbol of good luck) and in recent years have been used to ferry tourists up and down the river.

The ticket seller informed me that this is a good time to take a Bumboat tour, as the vessels are being phased out over the next few years in favour of quieter and more eco-friendly river tour boats.

I exited the Bumboat at Clarke Quay and walked back to the Esplanade to meet Vini and Indu for lunch.

The Dalhousie Obelisk, found along the river walk, was erected in commemoration of the visit of the Governor of India in the late 1800’s

Singaporeans have a great sense of humour. They sell postcards, shirts and magnets poking fun at their fine country. Anything that won’t land you in jail may very well take a huge chunk of cash out of your wallet.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.. and fines too!

I did get a little bit turned around in my wanders back to the Esplanade and normally wouldn’t have been concerned. The area is so calm and serene I could have sauntered through the streets for hours – unfortunately, I had a lunch date and an upcoming trip to the airport and couldn’t be delayed. I stopped a police woman and asked for directions. Not only did she point me where I needed to go, she walked with me to the turn in the road to make sure I was heading in the right direction.

Now that I’ve been to Singapore and know that Canadians don’t need to apply for a visitor visas before landing in this beautiful city/country, I’m plotting ways to return. While the cost of living in Singapore is high, the hotel accommodations are far more reasonably priced than similar rooms in most of India. I’ll need to start saving my pennies now to ensure the hubby and I can visit the city for a longer time in the near future.

My header graphic has changed – I’m safely back in Bangalore and my cell phone seems to be working *knock on wood*

There’s never enough time to see and do everything we want when traveling on business. As I mentioned last week, my trip to Manila was cut a few weeks short and with the 12-17 hour work days, it just wasn’t possible to see everyone. In fact, I really didn’t see anyone at all. Of course, I did get to visit with co-workers in the office, but I barely had time to glimpse Pau and Jing and didn’t see Eula at all. I’m passing through for about 12 hours next Sunday and have already booked time to see all three of them for the afternoon and evening.

I did manage to get to Greenhills for a few hours on my last day and grab up some magnetic bracelets. I really love giving these as gifts, so it should come as no surprise when people find them in their birthday and Christmas packages this year…

Thank goodness for small mercies though. Since Ted is remaining in Manila for another 2 weeks, I was able to leave my now broken (yes, the new suitcase has no handle) suitcase in his room until I pass through Manila again to fly home to Canada next weekend. At least I didn’t have to try and lug that back through Singapore and pay the huge overage charges again! I can’t believe the travel agency booked me on a limited luggage ticket. I had to pay a small fortune to bring the second suitcase from India to Manila and since I had to make the trip twice more in a week, I was really dreading flying back and forth with two bags!

    Memories

I am tired and overworked and back in India. I cried like a baby this afternoon as I couldn’t stop thinking of dad. I know he would have loved visiting Singapore and wandering the warren of streets.

My prayers go out to Heather who lost her father on Valentine’s day.

Folks, you know what that changed header graphic means – I’ve landed safely in Manila and will be spending the next week working out of the office here before heading back to B’lore, India for another week. I’m pretty exhausted and have to head into the office tomorrow, so I’m off for some much needed sleep.Take care.
