Thursday Thirteen – Shoes

Welcome to the 27th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

Yesterday I mentioned that my new job will mean that I’m likely not going to be able to afford the new pair of shoes I want anytime soon. Nicholas commented that overpriced designer shoes are useless. I beg to differ.

Thirteen reasons I need more shoes.

  1. My hubby has more pairs of shoes than I do. Honest. We counted.
  2. I have very small but oddly wide feet. It’s hard to find shoes to fit me outside of the children’s department. Most children’s shoes are very poorly made with cheap materials. Sure, I may only spend 20$ a pair, but they hurt my feet and fall apart within months, resulting in my needing to buy MORE shoes.
  3. A well made pair of shoes can last a very long time. I once had a pair of Doc’s that I wore for 5 years straight – until I wore out the soles. Anyone who has previously owned Doc’s can tell you this is no easy feat.
  4. Price tag on the Doc’s was over $250. The shoe stores that carried them wouldn’t order children’s sizes because no one in the right mind would spend that much $$ on a pair of shoes for a kid who would outgrow them in a few months. I had to have them special ordered in and waited over a month for them to arrive.
  5. I once spent 3 weeks searching for a pair of simple black dress shoes with a small heel (less than 1 in) appropriate for daily wear at work.
  6. I think it’s far better to spend a lot of money on a good pair of shoes that will last a number of years than on a cheap pair that will fall apart in a matter of weeks. Over a given period of time, it’ll actually cost less $$.
  7. Rockports and Naturalizer shoes cost approximately 75% of the price tag on a the Prada shoes I want. If I’m going to spend that much money anyway, I might as well save my pennies and go all the way.
  8. I need something comfortable on my feet when I walk up 9 flights of stairs in the parking garage at the end of the work day.
  9. It’s terribly embarrassing to only own one pair of black shoes (Doc’s) that you can wear to work. Have you ever tried looking business-like in a skirt and Doc’s?
  10. They fit properly.
  11. They’re appropriate for work or play.
  12. They’re comfortable.
  13. If I bought them, I’d have shoes that match my purse and wallet ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I’m so hard on shoes. It doesn’t matter if I buy expensive shoes or cheap ones…they last me the same amount of time. That’s inherited. My aunt and mom were the same way.

  2. I am so bad about shoes. I have more shoes than I care to count but I don’t have the clothes to got with them all. The sad thing is , I might have 50 pair of shoes, but I only wear about 3 of them.

  3. Ohhhhh, I don’t think I could ever spend that kind of money on a pair of shoes. My shoes don’t wear out, I tend to throw them out every season because I always want the newest styles and ALL of the newest styles ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank goodness for Payless and Shoe Carnival!!!! I can afford my shoe obsession!

Happy TT! Jessica The Rock Chick

  4. If I didn’t wear the soles of my first pair of Docs out, I sure came close. I’ve got a second pair, but they aren’t women’s style, and they don’t fit quite as well, so I don’t wear them as much as I did that first pair. Oxblood. Man, I loved those Docs.

But you’re right. Hard to feel businesslike in them, unless your business is rock and roll. (and hey, Mitchell wears them! In fact, they appear in the first bean dip outtake, too. The Erica chick is wearing them.)

Btw, while I’m babbling about Doc Martens, their website is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen.

  5. Like you, I have a hard time buying shoes not because I have small feet but otherwise. We have the same problem really. I need more quality and I don’t really mind spending for the quality I need rather than buy a lot of shoes that would wear out on me in less than a year.

Save up and go buy that Prada pair you want ๐Ÿ™‚

    Happy weekend ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Haha, wonderful list of reasons why you should get more shoes.

  7. I take a size 10 shoe and thankfully it doesn’t seem to be a big deal like it was 30 years ago when I needed them. Maybe people’s feet are growing. Not yours though. Children’s shoes?? Great list and I agree with absolutely everything. See now I can go out next week and buy those Mephisto sandals I want so badly and I know ‘someone’ will understand.

  9. It IS far better to spend the money on a good pair of shoes.

The only reason to buy cheap shoes is if you’re someone who follows trends, which will probably be gone at about the same time that the shoes wear out, LOL.

  10. I love shoes… have way too many pairs, and find myself wearing the same 3 or 4, and also found myself wanting to buy different coloured shoes and then always buying another black pair! Have broken out of that mould recently, buying red… red mary-janes, red sandals and today was looking at a pair of flatty red boots! By biggest problem is I can’t really wear heels… and I have a wide foot.

  11. You might want to look into getting some shoes from Spain or Italy as people there tend to have smaller and wider feet.
Especially if you are looking for something stylish.
    Happy late TT!

  12. I have a pair of Prada flats that cost over $700…(approximately seven times the most I have ever spent on a single pair of shoes)…and they were worth every penny. I feel spectacular when I wear them. I’ve wasted way more than $700 on things I’ve used less often and regretted much more. Um….my husband doesn’t actually know they are Prada…or how much they cost. But, then again, I’m quite certain there have been moments in Vegas when he’s had at least that much sitting on a craps table bet on a single roll of the dice. We all have our vices.

  13. o well now i admit …im bad with shoes too! i used to wear three inches of high heels and suffer at some point…back then when i was “not so heavy” ahahah! now i realized i could go for those cute flats and loafers and still be fab..and what works well for me is the china made crocs…they have a cute line of mary janes that also come with black too..miss you sheelagh

I love shoes- I bought 2 new pairs this weekend ๐Ÿ™‚

You should check out Easy Spirit for shoes- they have a large range of sizes and they come in different widths- I got a really cute pair of wedges a few weeks ago, and they’re one of my favorite pairs of shoes!

  15. Great list! I remain unconvinced, but a geat list.

  16. holy cowleather – i almost missed your post on shoes! One of my most favorite things in the world. Shoe shopping equals sanity in my world.
