je me souviens

September 11th, 2006 she Posted in Random Burbling 2 Comments »

I remember waking up that morning thinking it was just another day at work. I remember thinking it was a beautiful morning in Winnipeg and laughing along to Tom and Joe on the radio as I drove into work. I remember the shock of hearing the first plane had crashed into a tower while on Kenaston, a few feet from Scurfield. I remember driving into the parking lot and sitting in my car, waiting for more news.

I remember walking into the office thinking it was a tragic accident and feeling heartbroken for the family members of those on the plane. I remember thinking that the damage to the office and resulting injuries would likely be minimal.

I remember logging into my computer and starting my work day. I remember the commotion on the production floor when the second plane hit. I had barely sat down at my desk. I did not stay.

I remember standing in the lunch room, glued to CNN, watching in disbelief as both towers collapsed. I don’t remember leaving there for hours.

I remember the panic in the voices of US based co-workers. I remember learning we had offices in one of the towers.

I remember customers calling – reaching out – just to hear another human voice on the line. I remember that we talked to each and every one of them, no matter how long it took.

I remember the news that planes were being diverted and receiving a quick phone call from my hubby telling me he had no idea when he would be allowed to return home. I remember hearing that members of 402 Sqn at 14 17 Wing were guarding three planes on the base side of the airport in the news. I remember he didn’t come home for three days and how sympathetic he was for the people forced to remain on the aircraft while he and his fellow soldiers patrolled the tarmac.

Many forget that not every passenger on those diverted planes were allowed to disembark and find temporary housing in hotels, schools and people’s homes. I remember.

I remember sitting in my living room reaching out via telephone for help making sense of what had happened. I remember feeling the world was slipping sideways. I remember talking to my dad – he who grew up during the blitz and had survived many an air raid and bombing in London during WWII – hoping for answers and gaining none.

It has been five years. Just as I have never forgotten Tiananmen, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Challenger disaster, I will never forget 9-11.

May the tragic loss of life as a result of terrorist actions in New York on September 11, 2005 never be forgotten. Each life was special. Each loss devastating to friends, family and co-workers.

Je me souviens. I remember.

it feels like a monday

Did you ever have one of those days where you suspect that, despite all those years spent in college or university, you know absolutely nothing? It’s as if everything that you believed you knew turned to jelly and leaked out of your ears!

It could be sleep deprivation, hunger, or a bad case of self-confidence destroying stress. I just don’t feel myself today. I find my usually short fuze has fizzled down to a centimetre in length and every new crisis today has made me question my competence and ability to do anything useful.

I’d advise everyone to stay a good 5 to 10 metres back. Like Ste. Helens, I’m likely to blow at any time…

has it come to this?

The Edmonton Sun is running an article titled Overtime heroes today.

I’ve always said there was a time and a place for unions, but this just seems to confirm my growing belief that the time and place seems to have been long past. Of course they didn’t want their grievance to be publicized. I can’t see how the local CUPE reps who filed the grievance can come out looking like anything other than money grubbing heartless individuals.

warning: not suitable for all audiences

After my lengthy rant yesterday, I’ve nothing to write about today aside from the horrific grammatical errors I made in yesterday’s posting that I’m too lazy to clean up. Maybe I’ll leave them there as a testament to inability to string a sentence together when I’m tired and cranky.

It’s pretty obvious that I spend a lot of time reading certain sites and blogs. After all, there are a few, such as dust my broom, harold jarche, daimnation!, and stephen’s web that I link to or babble about frequently. Today, I thought I’d list off a few of my favourite places to visit this week. Sure, you could find these scrolling random blogrolls or surfing, but isn’t it more fun when a crazed loon recommends a place to hang out?

The joy of blogs is that you don’t always have to read them or agree with what’s being said. You can change your bookmarks or feed reader as often as you change your socks. In fact, I might have a mood swing and decide that the entire list of places I visit semi-frequently should change tomorrow…

just a little patience

August 28th, 2006 she Posted in Random Burbling No Comments »

Some people have an amazing ability to quietly sit while the idiosyncracies of other’s behaviour jumps up and down on their last nerve. They can answer the same question repeatedly without steam emerging from their ears. They smile, nod and appear to care when a small child rambles on about the events of their day. They pick-up after babies and coo gently in their ears.

I am not one of those people.

The smallest things have been known to annoy me and set me off on monumental bouts of ranting and raving like a crazy lady. I’m amazed steam doesn’t flow freely from my ears on a near daily basis.

In fact, my monumental lack of patience is one of the main reasons I decided I never wanted to be a teacher when I was at university. As a child, I dreamed of being a teacher; molding young minds, developing the leaders of tomorrow, making a difference and all that good stuff. Within a few short weeks I’d discovered that not only had I wanted to be a teacher – I wanted to be a good one. I just didn’t have the patience to hold someone’s hand through each step. It annoyed me if someone couldn’t pick up something I was showing them as quickly as I did. It drove me nuts when others didn’t make the same leaps of logic (or whatever my odd mental ramblings can be called) and arrive on the other side of the equation with me.

Occassionally I’m jealous of those who have this infinite well of patience from which to draw upon. Then, I wake up and realize that attempting to change who I am to please others always gets me in a tonne of trouble and misery. If my hubby can manage to put up with me, everyone else will just need to learn to love me as I am too.

My mother is under the delusion that I’ll learn patience by living at home and caring for dad. Boy, is she in for a surprise…
