  • i miss my mac

The corporate world I am floating through is very PC based. A few years ago I had an opportunity to play around on Macs in my work environment, but it’s been a number of years since I’ve even seen one in the office. Knowing this, when it was time to choose a laptop I could use for business and pleasure, I decided to go the PC route. Each time I needed a laptop upgrade, I drooled and pined over iBooks but over the years have settled on a progression of Compaq, Averatec, and Dell machines.

I consoled myself with the knowledge that at least I had a nice Mac desktop at home to use when I wasn’t travelling.

Owning a laptop makes it hard to move from the comfy couch to the hard office chair after a long day’s work. There are a bazillion excuses why I’d sit working away on my Dell rather than caressing the keys of my Mac. Finally, when we moved to the mouse house the pretense of working on my Mac was abandoned. We don’t yet have the space to accomodate a desktop system in the small office/library/craft room. So it sits abandoned in a closet in it’s original packaging. When I’m home, I hear it calling to me.

Every few days, when I’m busy cursing some new annoyance brought on by my laptop or a Windows based program, I fantasize about cracking open the packing boxes and setting up the Mac. I dream of winning the lottery so I can ditch the Dell and buy a shiney new iBook…

Today, I was trying to pull a piece of software off my system to reinstall, only to be advised by the system repeatedly that bits and pieces were still installed. Thus began my lengthy time in purgatory – suffering through yea old dig through the registry and try to find all it’s tendrils un-install method.

I can’t stand it anymore. I really miss my Mac today.

    long hard road

I’m pro-military. There are lots of decisions made by our politicians that I disagree with but those decisions don’t colour my opinions of the members of the Candian Forces. You can’t marry and live with someone who believes their job in the Canadian Forces is a calling and not believe in the need for, necessity and mission of our soldiers.

These past few weeks have been hard. We’ve lost a number of soldiers due to road side bombings and accidents. Many of the deceased were stationed at our base. Those lost are members of our extended family – those who chose to serve – whether or not we knew them personally.

As I read the newspaper, online articles and watch the news, I’m disheartened by the continual emphasis by the media outlets to the opinions of politicians and citizens who support either 1) bringing our troops home or 2) changing their mandate to peacekeeping and infrastructure building instead of combat. Some of the people with this attitude have never met a member of our Canadian Forces. They’ve never spoken to a soldier or members of their families. I am astounded at the knee-jerk reaction and naivete of these individuals and do not believe that equal time or opportunity to speak is being provided to those who offer an opposing view and support the current mission.

If we are unwilling to fight to protect citizens in Afghanistan – where we have been invited and continually requested to stay and assist by the current Afghani government and sanctioned by the UN – then how can anyone possibly expect a Canadian soldier to successfully build infrastructure (roads, schools, homes, water plants, etc.) that will not be immediately destroyed? If we pull our troops home due to the harsh realities of combat, how can we honestly hold out heads up in public – either locally or in an international venue – and claim to care about womens’ rights, the tenants of democracy and freedom?

It is as if we have forgotten:

“War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

    –John Stuart Mill

I like to think I’m not blood-thirsty nor clouded by any desire or love of war. I like to think my opinion is founded on logic and an intimate knowledge of the sacrifice entailed for our soldier to perform their current mandate. At minimum, I’ve spent many hours considering both sides of the coin, knowing that this is not some strangers’ son that I’m willing to put on the line in order to see the mandate carried out. It is my family who is directly affected when I say I support our troops and their current actions in Afghanistan.

I am not writing in hopes of gaining political ground or with rose coloured glasses firmly in place. I understand the sacrifice I am asking others to make in order to attempt to bring long lasting stability and peace to this war-torn region. I understand that we may make that sacrifice ourselves.

To the families of those who have fallen recently, I can only extend my sympathies. I will not pretend to know what you are going through. What I do know is that many of our CF members in theatre and out believe in what they have been asked to do. They believe in the mission. We should never stop believing in them.

Soft winds, gentle landings. Pro Patria.

    blinders off

It’s frightening that in Canada we’re now jailing people who haven’t been formally charged with a crime. But in this case, I can’t help but wonder if the action is worth the possible slippery slope it appears this court decision puts us on. Specifically, the news that Racist web postings land white supremacist in jail is welcome. The disturbing element is that the jail time (9 months) has been assigned without the laying of criminal charges. I’m not a lawyer, so perhaps ignoring a pre-existing court order is sufficient to get around the requirement to be charged with an office before being jailed.

Feel free to educate me in the comments.

You have to wonder about the type of home environment people with these views grew up in. I’m tired of the old “child of immigrants” schtick. I’m the child of immigrants and I certainly was never taught to believe anything of this nature. In fact, I’d have to say my parents taught me that people are to be viewed on a individual (personal) basis based on what they say and do. Painting entire swaths of people with the same brush is ludicrious.

“outlined in chalk, we all look the same” – matthew goode

There was a time when I wrote continuously. It was as if I was driven to put words on paper. I’d bring scratch pads and pens with me almost everywhere I went just in case a thought struck that I need to capture before it disappeared. Lately, I’ve found that the driving need to write doesn’t seem to exist anymore.

    I’m feeling very lost today.
