Verdict

Thankfully I do not have a broken knuckle or damage to other bones in my hand. According the the doctor who poked and prodded my hand while I grimaced and screeched like a bean sidhe, I have a soft tissue injury. This appears to be doctor speak for “we have no clue what’s wrong but you’re obviously in a lot of pain and there’s a large amount of unexplained swelling in the affected area.”

I should be fine in a few days with the help of an anti-inflammatory medication. I was warned that if the swollen area turns bright red, throws off heat, and swells more that I’ll need to get my butt back to see the doctor as it’s possible I have some sort of infection. The doctor didn’t think this was likely though.

I’m just happy to know that it’s not a repetitive strain injury from typing. My iPhone has been ruled out as the source of the problem. *whew*

While holding the doctor captive I also got an adjustment made to my sleeping pills. I really don’t like the ones I was originally prescribed. They knock me on my ass for a long period of time and I don’t like how they make me feel. They do work but I find they work far too well. I need a good 24 hour period to ensure the drug is out of my system so I can drive (or think) again. I dislike the way they make me feel so much that I tend to suffer through long bouts of insomnia rather than take the pills. The new drug is supposed to be much milder and non-habit forming. Hopefully I’ll have better reactions to them and won’t be so afraid to take them.

Double bonus – no ear infection. Hey, if I’m going to make the trek to a medicentre I’m going to get my tax dollars worth and ask all my medical questions in one sitting.

mcpyper played an important role in today’s trip to the medicentre. Shortly after I figured out how to dress myself she arrived at my doorstep to play chauffeur. She kept me company throughout the wait to see a doctor before kidnapping me and bringing me home for dinner and to watch a local short Bollywood style film – Breakout of the Masala kid. Her husband helped with some of the prop work in the film’s production and the family got to watch the filming. While not up to Mumbai standards of film making it’s a cute and upbeat little story and we laughed quite a bit while watching it.

2009 started out filled with pain but is morphing into a much better time. Here’s to constant improvement throughout the year.

  1. Glad it’s nothing serious. HAve you tried taking melatonin? I hate how sleeping pills make me feel. they’re all the same, I take one and am in a coma for at least 12 hours (not good when you have kids and the husband doesn’t hear them), then the next day I stumble into things and doze all day long if I sit down for longer than 5 minutes. Again, not good when you are responsible for little lives.

I tried melatonin and it works awesome. That said, I don’t have clinical insomnia, just racing thoughts running after more racing thoughts that won’t shut the f up.

  2. A big part of my insomnia has to do with racing thoughts and not being able to shut my brain off. Problem is that it occurs on a near daily (nightly?) basis for weeks on end. Then I’ll get a few days sleep (sheer exhaustion I expect) before it all starts again. Been like this for about a decade.

I haven’t tried melatonin and Joy mentioned something the other day that started with a C – she even spelled it for me and everythin – and I thought I’d remember what it was. I should have known better and written it down!

Anti-inflammatories seem to be working wonders as I almost have full movement back in my finger and dressing wasn’t such an adventure today!

  3. Phosphatidyl Choline. You can get it in most health food stores. I’m telling you…it has been a miracle for my insomnia. Racing thoughts be gone!

Glad your finger is doing better. Tres weird that it hurts in the first place. Must have smacked it pretty good in your sleep.

  4. Coming to get Miss Daisy again soon. Boss let us off early so I bolted this time rather than hangin around to get a few things done (which of course never get done). Strap your booties on.

  5. I had sudden swelling in a joint just like that a couple years ago, went to the doctor and he said it was gout and gave me anti-inflammatories that worked right away.

I am of the thought (I am not doctor), that insomnia causes raising thoughts not the other way around. In other words, there is more of chemical imbalance than a thought problem which means if you fix the problem with the body, the mind works right. I can have racing thoughts all day and go to sleep with about the third thought that pops into my head. I have had sleeping problems in the past and I had no energy in the day and still had sleeping problems. I take B complex vitamins before I go to bed along with C, calcium, and D. I sleep really hard and get up with lots of energy and go all day and repeat. I don’t know if that would help you or make things worse but despite my age, I am not having sleeping problems yet. I expect they will come in the next 10 years as my mom is using sleeping pills and her sisters have all had to have them, but until then, I will keep doing what I am doing. Good luck with that and I am glad your hand is feeling better.
