Welcome to the 7th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.
Furry children abound in this household. They make us laugh, they lower our blood pressure, they force us to make sure we exercise. They also seem to eat anything that’s not tied down. This week’s Thursday Thirteen is an incomplete list of things the dogs have chewed. Sometimes I have to wonder if we’re just not feeding them the right things…

Thirteen Things about SHE. Thirteen things the dogs have chewed in the past 7 years.
- Shoes – I have odd sized feet. I’ve blogged about it before (here). Shoes are not easy for me to find. Both Hypnos and Fenris have eaten their fair share of mine and the hubby’s shoes, but I think the absolute worst was when Fenris figured out how to open the hall closet door. After spending 3 days shoe shopping I found two pairs of dress shoes. Fenris ate them within 48 hours of their arrival in the house.
- Dog crate(s) – We tried crate training Hypnos when he first arrived. He was found abandoned in the wild and had only spent a few weeks at a shelter before we adopted him. He’s very much a people puppy and doesn’t want to be away from where the action is. He ate his way through 3 crate cushions and the plastic bottoms of two of them before we decided that maybe crating him wasn’t going to work. He broke the welds on the last crate he spent time in – it was an extra large crate and he’s only a 50 lb dog, so it was quite the feat – before we took the hint. He’s much happier and doing far less damage to the house now that we’ve put away the crate and let him have free reign over the house when we’re not home…
- Moulding (door & baseboard) – After Hypnos broke the first crate and before we’d managed to replace it, we tried shutting him in the spare bedroom while we were at work. He proceeded to chew all the moulding from around the door and along the baseboards.
- Power cords – The cats have chewed their way through a number of mice cords before the days of laptops and wireless mice. Hypnos decided to start somewhere higher on the list and chewed through the power cord for the fridge.
- Teddy bears – Never let a child bring a teddy bear into a house with dogs that have stuffed chew toys. The results aren’t pretty.
- Coffee table – When I was home helping to care for dad, I received a phone call wherein the hubby casually mentioned that the dog had chewed the new coffee table. It had taken over two years to select the table – it’s hard buying furnature for a small space – and Hypnos apparently decided it would make a good snack. I’m sure the neighbours could hear me screaming What? when the hubby delivered the news. Dad did get a bit of a chuckle out of it when I told him.
- Computer desk – Compared to some of the other peices of furnature they’ve chewed on, the desk got off lucky.
- Pillows – Have you ever had a nightmare where you think you’re eating something and wake up with your pillow in your mouth? Me neither. Apparently Fenris has though. She’s eaten at least two bed pillows over the years.
- Loveseat – About a week after we bought a new loveseat, Hypnos pulled the cushions off of it and started snacking on the uphostery under the cushions. He didn’t manage to do too much damage before we returned home, but just enough that we had to purchase drop covers to hide the damage…
- Loveseat pillow stuffing – I’m not really sure how (or who) managed this. About a year after we bought the loveseat, he pulled the cushions off of the loveseat, managed to unzip the cushion covers, and pulled the cushion stuffing out of the cover to chew on it.
- Swivel chair – When I moved into my second apartment, my parents gave me a Kroeger chair they had purchased years earlier. Our dog Whiskey had chewed it a little when we were kids. Shortly after we adopted Fenris she decided that it would make a nice fibrous snack and she proceeded to finish off what Whiskey had started a over decade earlier. Of course, she didn’t stop at chewing the uphostry – she also chewed the arm through to the wooden frame and took a big chunk out of the wood as well.
- Leashes and collars – Fenris has chewed a few collars in her time but it was Hypnos who had managed to chew his way through 4 different leashes in the last year.
- Duvet – This wouldn’t be so bad, except Hypnos chewed our puppy-sitters duvet while we were out of town. The hubby frequently tells them that it’s Hynos’ version of repayment for when their dog (Poppy) tore the screen door off of our sliding patio doors.
After reading that list I think I need someone to explain to me why we still have dogs.
This picture of Fenris says it all.

Thanks… now I remember why it is good that I don’t have a dog anymore!

I guess we are lucky with only 3, 5, and 12 on our list for Lucy the Bassett Hound, but she will not shut up if you have human food in your hand or mouth!

My Chocolate Lab is a chewer ~ She’s 2 and 1/2 and still goes a little nuts now and then. Dirty diapers are the WORST!
Thanks for stopping by! Happy TT!

*snert*
I have only the three cats, and with smaller mouths, they’re a bit more limited in the amount of damage they choose to inflict. Butbutbut…just look at that face. Who can resist that face!!
And really, when you name a dog after Loki’s wolf-child, you have to expect certain things.
Just make sure she doesn’t drag Fimbulwinter into the house one day 😀

I remember a boxer of ours eating a stuffed toy that my mum had on the back of the sofa … £750.00 and an appendix scar later! It never stopped him though 😀

I’ve never had a dog, very interesting . . .

He looks big enough to chew on somebody as well as something!
My brother’s german shepherd destroyed everything on their couch except the springs in about a 3 hour period of being alone!
Ours just chews soccer balls…footballs….basketballs…..
🙂

I have a tiny furry pup that has chewed most of these items, and a little boy who has drawn on most of them, too. 😉
I’ve posted my Thursday Thirteen, too. Enjoy!

And I thought my sister’s dog eating a banana was bad!
I’d have to hang onto those puppies, too, if they looked like yours. Precious babies, despite the oral issues.
Happy TT!

When our memphis was a puppy he got into the cupboard and chewed up a bag of cashews, flour and some sour grub lollys (did not impress my wife!) – needless to say he was a puppy with a sore belly later in the day.

Yikes. We have been fortunate with our pooches, and little destruction. Happy TT

You keep them because you love them… same reason we keep ours! We had a Basenji that ate the TV remote and an expensive custom chess set all in one afternoon. She wasn’t large enough to consume furniture, thank God! Thanks for stopping by my blog, by the way. I just love company! Happy Thursday!

Your very last statement (about why do you still have dogs?) was what i was thinking the entire time reading your post…. although I admit that I had dogs I did not abandon (or at least give away) after they chewed through quite a bit of my stuff too… so I guess I understand.
Happy Thursday!

I actually mentioned this the other day. Our dog Rocy, who we adopted and who had been abused, decided he did not being alone when we first got him.
One day he ate the entire arm of one loveseat and most of the other loveseat…
Both had to be replaced… UGH

That “What me?” look on the doggy’s face is just too much.
I remember finding three pair of beloved Bass Weejuns chewed to bits years ago.
And the linoleum, and the nose of my daughter’s Care Bear and…
LOL – thanks for a blast from the past.
Have a fabulous Thursday.

Had dogs all my life. When I was a child, our dachsund taught me and my sibs to ALWAYS PUT OUR SHOES away and dirty clothes in the hamper. She would eat any shoes or socks left out.
And that’s why my sons Boys are outside dogs (allowed in for extended visits only when weather distresses them–luckily, they are both wet-and-cold loving dogs). “Inside” is a treat for them, exceeded only by their walks (even if the really BIG boy is afraid of the tiled flooring–he’s decided he canNOT stand up on it securely).

I’ve always wanted a dog. Thank you for fixing that urge. 🙂

LM – Guess it’s a good thing we named the cat Thanatos and not one of the dogs 😉
DKRaymer – I completely forgot about the chewed remotes and phones. Odd since they’re sitting on the table beside me at the moment.

Yeah, it’s really lucky for pets that they’re so cute! (says the lady who lives with 3 cats)

I’ve just had to replace my fourth laptop power cord since getting my puppy nine months ago. Are you telling me that it’s not going to stop?

I’ve been lucky. My dogs have only chewed one shoe instead of both. Wait a minute, why is that lucky?
We have them to make our lives full and complete and they are worth any material object that gets chewed up.
This was hilarious…
