UPDATE: 52 Books in 52 Weeks

It’s definitely time to set a new goal. Any suggestions?

It’s been a few months since my last update, but I haven’t had much chance to read of late. As of early May, I’d read 40 traditional (hard/soft cover) books. Since then, I’ve only managed to read an additional 18 books. Not to fear, I’m still plugging away at it and am giddily awaiting the arrival of the final Harry Potter in a few weeks and received my advanced shipping/packing notice from Chapters.ca this evening.

As always, I’m breaking the list down into two parts. The fist list contains paperback and hardcover books I’ve been able to find and list on Shelfari and the second list contains all the eBooks I’ve been reading that I can’t figure out how to add to Shefari yet. Their ISBN’s don’t bring up any information. If anyone knows how to get an eBook added to Shelfari, please let me in on the secret.

  1. I have kept a book journal since 1997 and one year I read 100 books. Then I started feeling all competitive about my book reading…as is my nature. But what I found is that I was sacrificing quaiity for quantity. I was avoiding reading longer, more intense books because they would take me too long. So, I’ve tried not to do that. My reading has definitely decreased since my blog reading increased. But when I find a book that really captures me, I’m enthralled.

I loved The Thirteenth Tale. You might find some good recommendations on my blog…if you click the “Book Reviews” category on the sidebar, you can skip all my blogs about life in Boca, my family, etc. and just get the books…I think I have star reviews on them if you go to the typelist of books I’m reading.

I was on a roll with good books for a while there and I would say my latest favorites are:

    The Price of Privilege (Non-Fiction)
    Without a Map (Non-fiction memoir…reads like fiction)

I don’t share your love of the Romance genre, but I might be swayed if someone would give me one definitive representative of the genre that I would enjoy. My book list since 1997 is eclectic…so I’ll try anything.

  2. Good thing I’m not all that competitive these days. I’ve always read for the fun of it. The world could be falling apart around me and as long as I have a book to read, I know I’ll get through it.

I don’t think I have a genre I love, although I did have a decade of Vampires that is long since over. I’ve since culled down the vampire related book and only kept a few hundred of my favourites to re-read. I’ve shelves of sci-fi/fantasy/dragons, my favourite children’s books, textbooks (learning theory, ID, ‘puters), crime and literature. When shopping for books, I tend to buy whatever sounds interesting at the time. Purchasing by mood makes for an eclectic library.

As for romance, it’s my jello for the mind. It’s an easy read when I’m trying to relax – especially when I was going through all that work related stress. I blame my mom for the Nora Roberts kick I’m on. I picked up my first one of her books (not those under the pseudonym JD Robb) while visiting my folks a while back.

Some people like to garden or listen to music to relax; I read.

  3. Pick a few you’ve never heard of and that aren’t best-sellers and enter the Summer’s Hidden Treasures contest! That’s a good goal, isn’t it? Entries open on the fifteenth and stay open for an entire month. You’ve got time, the way you’ve been reading!

  4. I like your list of books. I am also working on a list of books to read, however i am still compiling it. It can be seen on my account at Shelfari.com……My username is schaufferwaffer

Apparently Shelfari is coming out with a new blog widget that is supposed to be released in the next couple weeks.

    Good luck reading!
