Update: wants vs needs

I unboxed my Mac last night and discovered a few things:

  1. It takes up all the space on my craft table
  2. It still works like a charm
  3. I have a faulty memory. Sometime in the past I was able to get the OS upgraded to OS X.1.5, not OS X.0.5
  4. It takes next to no time to remember how to navigate and use OS 9 (system has a dual boot)
  5. It has a longish boot up sequence that is just a smidge longer than the boot sequence of my relatively new 2GHz dual core, 4MB RAM, etc. laptop running Vista
  6. Point 5 is really depressing when you consider that the Mac is well over a decade old and the PC laptop is just over a year old.  Repeat after me, “Vista is a giant piece of pooh”
  7. I can’t find the original installation disks for AppleWorks 6
  8. All the software is working fine on it

Some trips down memory lane are well worth the time/space required for unboxing.

I still want a shiny big MacBook though. Going to have to make a final decision soon.

  1. I so feel your perspective re. the new Mac. I’d love one, too…almost bought one last year in advance of quitting my job and joining a much smaller firm. Then I went to a conference and won (!) a business laptop from HP loaded with…you guessed it, Vista. I figured since beggars can’t be choosers, I put off plans to buy my beloved Mac and got cracking on my Windows-machine.

To this day, I still covet a new Mac, but it’s more of a want than a need. If my hP ups and dies tomorrow, I’ll suck it up, find the spare change (somehow) and buy the thing. But until then, I’ll keep using my appliance because I can’t cost-justify anything else at this point.

Oh, to be in a position that all of this is lower-case-d discretionary. Maybe soon.

  2. Wow, that sounds like a great computer;-). Funny how it keeps on ticking.
