Schnoz

I’d like a new nose please.

For as long as I can recall I’ve had sinus trouble. When it gets bad and the pressure builds up my eye starts watering. Today my eye is doing an impression of a giant fountain. Bah!

On the bright side I can’t smell anything when my nose gets like this so I didn’t have my usual gag attack when walking down the hallways at work. I like perfume or cologne as much as the next guy or gal but I can’t stand it when people bathe in their preferred scent.

Still. I wouldn’t mind a clear nose all year long. If anyone has any suggestions for relief I’m all ears.

  1. ‘Tis the season. Or at least the beginning of it. You’re probably done for until May.

As for sinus relief, OTC antihistamines work for some people.

Others have to make a little tent with a towel over a pot of hot water with Vicks gel floating around in it (for some reason it just doesn’t work the same if you throw lozenges in the pot). I think this just works because while you are dejectedly hanging your head and inhaling the steam, the Vicks stings your nose so much that you don’t notice your horrendous headache anymore. And it gives you the justification you were looking for to have the hot tea laced with brandy you were hoping.

  2. Let’s finish that sentence…. ‘the hot tea laced with brandy you were hoping for’.

    Cheers.

  3. Well if I didn’t know someone who actually used this, I would never recommend it but my daughter swears by the Neti Pot for anything to do with sinuses. She keeps trying to get Gregg to use one because he suffers with sinus infections all the time. Although, he started taking large doses of Vitamin C and says that has done wonders. But I have heard a lot of good things on the Neti Pot. http://www.squidoo.com/netipotnasalwash

    Get better soon.

  4. I pretty much live off of OTC anti-histamines. On days like today, where I forgot to take them to work with me, I suffer all afternoon. I’m looking forward to the summer since it’s one of the few times of the year that I can breathe clearly.

  5. I second the neti pot. I have a deviated septum and am way more prone to sinus pain and pressure. There have been days where my right eye swells up like I’ve got a shiner.

I also have another secret weapon, I assume that you have allergies as well (tend to go hand in hand)? Hit up the strathcona market for some unpasteurized honey. It’s an aurevedic remedy, I know I cannot spell. Basically you build your immunity to the local pollens. There is a guy there that is really local, like just north of St. Albert. Make sure to buy from the guy closest to the city.

I mean come on, do you need more of a reason to eat honey daily by the tsp?

I tell ya, when we first moved to Edmonton, I was miserable twice a year till I found this remedy. THen, while I was pregnant, I went off it (once it gets built up, you can eat it a few times a month and still keep it goin) because it’s unpasteurized. That spring I wanted to DIE! I realized it was because I was off the honey!

  6. The neti pot I shall look into but as for the honey suggestion *shudder*, to that I say a resounding “ewww yuck”. I’m not a fan of sticky sweet thingsa and honey tops the lists of foods that don’t pass through these lips – even if it could help with the allergies…

  7. Ok, then bee pollen. Same sorta thing, but the pollen and even the jelly can be pricier.

    Not like honey! Sheesh!

You could mix the honey into your tea?

I just personally hate taking OTC allergy meds, make me all loopy, I don’t need help in that department.
