  • Thursday Thirteen – Things to see and do in India

January 17th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests, Where No Flan Has Gone Before 34 Comments »

I’m posting this one up early since I have a full day ahead of me tomorrow.

Welcome to the 14th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

Now that my passport has been returned to me and I have a travel visa, I’m starting to plan out all the things I want to see and places I’d like to visit and the things I want to do while I’m in country (and when I have a free moment from work). I plan to blog from India, so you’ll can keep track of how many of the places I manage to visit before I head to Manila.

Thirteen Things about SHE. Places to see

    1. Agra – Taj Mahal – I’ve never been to the north of India before and lucky me I’ll be spending over a week in Gurgaon. I land only a few minutes before Indian Independence Day, so over the holiday weekend I’m going to make the trek out to Agra and see the Taj for the first time.
    2. Travel on the train. I’ve been told it’s an experience that should not be missed.
    3. See monkeys, elephants and snake charmers in Delhi. The only monkeys I saw in 2003 were at the templat at Chamundi Hill. I hear they’re all over the place in the north – along with snake charmers and elephants!
    4. Visit the Lalbagh Gardens. I spent 7 weeks in Bangalore in 2003 and still can’t believe I never made the trip to see these gardens while I was there previously.
    5. Visit the Mani Bhavan in Mumbai or Ghandi National museum in Dehli which chronicle the life of Mahatma Ghandi.
    6. Visit Vasai – This abandoned 16th century Portuguese fort (Fort Bassein or Baçaim) is a day trip from Mumbai.
    7. Be an extra in a Bollywood movie. Hey, last time I was in India I attended an invitation only MTV/Lycra party, so I may have a shot at reaching this goal as well. One can only dream. Of course, if I can’t manage to become an extra in a movie, I’d at least like to go to the cinema and see a Bollywood film in an Indian theatre.
    8. Visit Jama Vasjid. This is the largest mosque in “Old” Delhi and holds up to 25,000 worshippers at a time.
    9. Visit Qutb Minar.
    10. Visit Humayun’s Tomb and Nizam-ud-din’s Shrine in Dehli.
    11. Return to the Bull Temple. I’ve been there and written about my experience before, but my traveling companion hasn’t seen it yet.
    12. Shop and explore MG and Brigade roads (Bangalore). I had so much fun there in 2003. Perhaps on the drive I’ll manage to finally get a photo of the outside wall of the Catholic cemetery that had a painted sign stating “please do not pass urine here” that I used to pass each day on my way from the hotel to work.
    13. If there’s time, make a trip out to Chamundi Hill and Somnathapura (close to Mysore) while visiting Bangalore. I’m only spending 3 or 4 days in Bangalore, so I don’t know how much I’ll manage to see while I’m there. I do have to find time to fit in some work during my trip…

    Thursday Thirteen – Pre-Travel Checklist

January 10th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests, Where No Flan Has Gone Before 40 Comments »

Welcome to the 13th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

I know I’ve briefly mentioned this over the past few weeks, but it’s official – I’m heading to India from Jan 24th (landing Jan 25th) through Feb 22nd. I’ll then fly off to Manila from Feb 22nd through March 8th. Now the fun begins as I madly dash through all the preparations for the trip. Tickets have been purchased, travel visa’s have been applied for and the days before departure are flying by.

This week’s Thursday Thirteen outlines things I need to do before I can step foot on a plane.

Thirteen Things about SHE. Things I need to do before my trip.

    1. Act like a pin cusion and get my vaccinations for my trip to India – Jan 23rd.
    2. Attend a No Kidding! executive meeting – Jan 13th.
    3. Finish outstanding work projects – 1) Complete the training CSAT performance analysis and draft the final report. 2) Finish my current design and development projects and hand them off to co-workers. 3) Begin coding a simulation for language comprehension assessment.
    4. Purchase meds in prep for my trip to India and the Philippines – Pepto, Ranitadine, Tylenol, etc.
    5. Purchase some Salwar Kameez to wear. The blouses and skirts I traditionally wear in Manila aren’t really appropriate for business dress in India.
    6. Visit my dentist to fix the tooth I chipped last week ;(
    7. Find my travel cell phone – I have two cells, one tied to a North American network and one that’s open and can be used in South Asia and the Philippines. I know it’s here somewhere…
    8. Load my iPod with the music I can’t live without.
    9. Get my passport back from the India Consulate.
    10. Learn how to use my new digital camera so I can take lots of pictures while roaming around India and Manila.
    11. Find a spare battery for my laptop – Dell really needs to update their Web site. Their order screen is still displaying the wrong battery for the model I have.
    12. Purchase USD traveller’s cheques.
    13. Pack my bags – leaving lots of room to bring home goodies for all my friends and family.

Thursday Thirteen – Baby Steps to the Elevator

January 4th, 2007 she Posted in Popularity Contests 22 Comments »

Welcome to the 12th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

For Christmas, the exercise fairy brought pedometers to myself and a fellow co-worker. We’ve set up a daily challenge to see who walks around the center most on a day-to-day basis. I’m winning most days – mainly because Boo keeps forgetting her pedometer at home. Being a curious sort, I like to calculate how many steps it takes to get me where I need to go around the office. Multiply these numbers by a bazillion trips a day, and you get an idea of how much running around I can do in an average 8 hour shift.

This week’s Thursday Thirteen calculates how many steps it takes to get around the office assuming I start the (one way) journey at my cubicle.

Thirteen Things about SHE. Step Counting.

    1. 9 steps to the fax machine
    2. 69 steps to the lunchroom
    3. 86 steps to the ice and water machine
    4. 91 steps to the microwave
    5. 98 steps to the bathroom
    6. 101 steps to the vending machine to buy apple juice
    7. 142 steps to the mailroom
    8. 152 steps to the main floor printer
    9. 164 steps to the back door into HR
    10. 183 steps to the main meeting room
    11. 212 steps to the coffee shop
    12. 218 steps to the security desk
    13. 228 steps to the main door

    Thursday Thirteen – Christmas Goodies

December 28th, 2006 she Posted in Popularity Contests 30 Comments »

Welcome to the 11th edition of the screaming pages Thursday Thirteen.

Back in November, I posted a Christmas Wish List because the hubby was complaining that he didn’t get hints. He wanted to know exactly what it is I was hoping to find under the tree. Christmas has come and gone and I’m here to report that I didn’t receive a single thing on my wish list. This week’s Thursday Thirteen is a list of things I found under my tree.

Warning: This list will aptly demonstrate that I am spoiled rotten.

Thirteen Things about SHE. Christmas Haul.

    1. NHL Official Jersey – Edmonton Oilers – #35 – Roloson.
    2. DVD player / Karaoke machine.
    3. Karaoke microphones. Ok, so now you all know my dirty little secret. I’m a Karaoke junkie…
    4. Black ankle length dress.
    5. Chapters gift certificates. I didn’t get any of the books on my original wish list, but these will help me pick up the APA Publication Guide in time for my next series of classes at university.
    6. CD’s – U218 Singles and “Best of 70’s” boxed set.
    7. Scrapbooking goodies – papers, stickers, etc.
    8. Karaoke CD’s (2).
    9. Scene It – Turner Classic Movies Edition.
    10. Fleece sheets for the bed.
    11. Porcelain Santa figurine.
    12. Levi’s 501 jeans.
    13. British (Imported) chocolates – Minstrels, Cadbury Buttons, Galaxy Bar.

Bonus List: We have two Christmas traditions in our house. The first is that we buy one tree ornament for each year we’ve been together (here). The second is that we receive presents from just about anyone – cats, dogs, fictional characters, imaginary friends, etc. The rule in our house is that you only receive one gift from Santa and one from each other. These are usually the two biggest gifts. All other items under the tree are tagged as being from someone else. The name on the tag often relates in some way to the gift or a family joke. Below is a list of gifts given or received and who they were from.

Thirteen Things about SHE. Gift Tags

    1. Christopher Moore’s A Dirty Job from The Librarian.
    2. Terry Pratchett‘s A Hat Full of Sky and Wintersmith from Rincewind.
    3. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s The Book of the Dead from Thanatos.
    4. Snakes and Ladders drinking game (glass board and shot glasses) from the Lush Fairies.
    5. FoodSaver bags from the Kitchen Witches.
    6. Mobius Brain Teaser Puzzle from the gang at Mathnet.
    7. Various dog toys from Santa’s reindeer.
    8. New pj’s from the Dust Bunnies Under the Bed.
    9. Various CD’s from Music Fairies (I know, we were unoriginal when it came to music).
    10. Boxes of chocolates from Charlie.
    11. Calendars from Chronos.
    12. Gourmet hot chocolate from the Kitchen Gnomes (not to be confused with the witches).
    13. Wooden puzzle games from Fenris & Hypnos.

    Friday’s Feast: 123

December 22nd, 2006 she Posted in Popularity Contests 10 Comments »

Feast One Hundred & Twenty Three
Appetizer: What is one of your Christmas traditions?

    • The hubby and I buy a new Christmas ornament for the tree each year that we’ve been together. To date we’ve got 11 ornaments.

Soup: Who is the easiest person on your list to buy presents for?

    • If I were on my own list, I’d say me. Hand me a gift certificate to any book store and you’ve made my day 😉 Actually, the hubby is pretty easy to buy for. I know what he wants because he drops hints all over the place. It doesn’t hurt that he tends to want many of the same things I do.

Salad: What is your favorite Christmas scent?

    • The smell in the air just before it snows…

Main Course: If you could give a fellow blogger a Christmas gift, who would it be and what would you give them?

    • I’d sent the Dust my Broom crew Red Friday shirts and stuff. I offered a t-shirt and baseball cap to Darcy for his doggie, but I don’t think he took me seriously at the time…

Dessert: What’s something on your Christmas wish list this year that you need (not just want)?
